Diego Maradona just took over a football team

Argentina great Diego Maradona took over as chairman of Belarus soccer club Dynamo Brest on Monday after signing a three-year contract and said he hoped the country's strongman President Alexander Lukashenko would become a fan.

Maradona has caused a sensation in Belarus by agreeing to take charge of a club that was rescued from bankruptcy two years ago. He plans to move to Brest after parting company with Al-Fujairah FC where he was coach of the United Arab Emirates club. He touched down in Belarus after being a FIFA ambassador at the World Cup in next door Russia, where his matchday antics, including giving an obscene middle-finger gesture to Nigeria fans during one game, raised eyebrows.

"I want to make a photo with Lukashenko, I hope he will become our fan," Maradona said at a press conference after landing in Brest to the cheers of two dozen supporters, and being given a traditional welcome of bread and salt. "I can live without problems in Belarus," he added. Dynamo Brest have never won a league title and a local supporter told Reuters that until a couple of years ago the club had so little money that supporters sometimes were asked to raise funds for team jerseys.

But with the arrival of a new investor from the UAE, the club has won two domestic cups and plans to build a new stadium with a capacity of 30,000 fans. "Given the fact that boss Diego will live in Brest, I think people will come from all over the world to watch the game," said the club's director of development Viktor Radkov.Radkov said Maradona, who captained Argentina to World Cup success in 1986, will live in a mansion with a small gym in Brest and believes the Argentinian will move there by August.

"He had certain requirements, but all of them were reasonable," Radkov said. The 57-year-old former Barcelona and Napoli forward previously managed UAE team Al-Wasl along with the Argentina national team from 2008 to 2010.President Lukashenko has ruled Belarus with an iron fist for nearly a quarter of a century though ties with the West have improved after he agreed to release some prisoners and tolerate a degree of opposition in parliament.

Arsenal sponsorship deal with Chinese carmarker BYD gets caught up in fraud

$

English Premier League club Arsenal has launched an investigation after it was caught up in an alleged fraud involving its sponsorship deal with Chinese carmaker BYD.

Arsenal said the deal, which was launched with great fanfare in May, was among those affected after BYD revealed what it described as a plot to defraud advertising agencies.BYD said last week that a woman posing as the marketing manager of its Shanghai branch signed multiple contracts with advertising agencies to promote the company. One of the affected ad firms, Shanghai Jingzhi, has said BYD had been forced to refuse payment on contracts worth 1.1 billion yuan ($165 million). "BYD has informed Arsenal that they believe they have been the victim of a fraud in relation to various advertising agreements," Arsenal said in a statement on their Chinese website.

"This includes our partnership with BYD which was formally launched by both parties at an event at Emirates Stadium on 8th May." The team said it was "investigating the situation" but that it would make no further comment. The statement gave no details of the alleged fraud or its impact on the sponsorship deal. BYD, however, has said that ads were indeed produced for the BYD-Arsenal partnership earlier this year as a result of the alleged fraud. BYD, based in the southern city of Shenzhen, is one of China's biggest carmakers and a leading producer of electric vehicles. The woman involved was arrested by Shanghai police on suspicion of contract fraud and faking company seals, BYD said earlier this week.

Section 377 hearing: Wouldn't wait for govt to strike down law if it violates fundamental rights, says SC

$

The courts cannot wait for a "majoritarian government" to decide on enacting, amending or striking down a law if it violates fundamental rights, the Supreme Court asserted today.

"We would not wait for the majoritarian government to enact, amend or not to enact any law to deal with violations of fundamental rights," a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra observed while hearing a batch of petitions seeking decriminalisation of consensual gay sex.

The courts are not in obligation to wait and would act if any violation of fundamental right was brought before it, the bench, which also comprised Justices RF Nariman, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra, said.
The observations by the bench, which is dealing with a clutch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, came when advocate Shyam George, appearing for some Apostolic Alliance of Churches and Utkal Christian Association, submitted that it was the legislature's job to decide whether to amend or allow section 377 in the statute book.

"The moment we are convinced about violation of the fundamental right, the object of these fundamental rights give power to the court to strike down the law," the bench said. The lawyer also referred to the term "sexual orientation" and said it cannot be read interchangeably with the term "sex" used in article 14 and 15 which deal with the right to equality of the citizen. He said the term sexual orientation was different from the term sex as there have been several kinds of sexual orientation, besides the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer).

Section 377 refers to 'unnatural offences' and says whoever voluntarily has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life, or with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to 10 years, and shall also be liable to pay a fine. The advancing of arguments would resume later in the afternoon.

The top court had on July 12 said the social stigma and discrimination attached to the LGBTQ community would go if criminality of consensual gay sex is done away with, while maintaining that it would scrutinise the legal validity of section 377 of the IPC in all its aspects. The court had observed that an environment has been created in the Indian society over the years that has led to deep-rooted discrimination against the community which has also adversely impacted their mental health.

Earlier, the government had left it to the apex court to test the constitutional validity of section 377, urging that issues like gay marriages, adoption and ancillary civil rights of LGBTQ should not be dealt by it.Taking note of the Centre's submission that other issues like gay marriages, adoption and ancillary civil rights of LGBTQ community should not be dealt, the court said it was not considering all these issues.

The bench had said it would test the validity of the law in relation to the consensual sexual acts of two adults and if it decides to strike down the penal provision then it would remove "ancillary disqualification" of LGBTQ community members which can join services, contest elections and form associations.

Asian Games: Hockey coach Harendra Singh has a word of caution for his boys

$

0

The Indian men's hockey coach Harendra Singh feels his defending champion side cannot afford to take things easy in next month's Asian Games even though it is a gold medal favourite owing to its highest-ranked status in the draw.

World no. 6 India have been placed in Pool A alongside Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka and Hong Kong China, while Pool B comprises Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Oman, Thailand and hosts Indonesia.India will open its title defence against minnows Hong Kong China on August 22 followed by games against Japan (August 24), Korea (August 26) and Sri Lanka (August 28)."Though we are the defending champions, we cannot take any team lightly. I don't call this an easy group. We must be highly cautious against each of these teams as we have not played against teams like Hong Kong China and Sri Lanka," Harendra said after the schedule was announced yesterday.

"Japan is a rising team in Asia and are capable of surprising any team. They have done well in recent events while Korea too are a good team, play very defensive hockey." India defeated Pakistan in the final of the 2014 AsianGames to win the gold and with the 2020 Olympics berth at stake, Harendra and his men would be eager to book their direct ticket to Tokyo here."I expect the team to be hungry to win the gold again and get direct qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games. I want to make it clear that there will be no room for complacency," the chief coach asserted.

The Indian women's team, meanwhile, has been placed in Pool B alongside title holders Korea, Thailand, Kazakhstan and Indonesia. Pool A features China, Japan, Malaysia, Hong Kong China and Chinese Taipei. The Indian women's team will open its campaign against hosts Indonesia on August 19, followed by games against Kazakhstan (August 21), Korea (August 25) and Thailand (August 27).Like his counterpart of the men's team, Indian women's hockey team chief coach Sjoerd Marijne is also eying a gold in the Asian Games but feels Korea will give them a tough fight in their pursuit.

The Indian women's team had to settled for the bronze medal in the 2014 Asian Games. In the Asian Games pool, Korea will be our toughest challenge and I am happy we have played quite a few matches against them this year and are aware of how they play," Marijne said."The only thing I would like to say to the team is that it does not matter who we play, if we want to win, we must win against everyone whether they are ranked lower than us or higher, he added.

In a matter of days since World Cup final, landslide damages Russian stadium

Heavy rain damaged one of Russia's newly-built World Cup stadiums on Sunday when the tournament ended with the final in Moscow.

Footage from the southern city of Volgograd showed a fresh landslide on an embankment near the stadium, which made a several-metre-deep hole in it and covered a sidewalk with mud.

A spokesman for the state Sport In company overseeing the construction said there were also leaks inside the stadium which could take up to a week to repair.

"I'm sorry for the city. They invested so much money and it was washed away by one rain," 19-year-old Vitaly Ovchinnikov, a local resident, told Reuters TV.

Volgograd Arena, a stadium that can accommodate up to 45,000 spectators, was built for the World Cup at a cost over 16 billion roubles ($257 million), according to data on the regional government's website.

"It's not normal. It was built for federal money, for taxes we pay them," another local resident, Mikhail Nesterenko, 64, said.

Eight teams played World Cup group matches in Volgograd, including England and Japan who made it to the knockout stages.

Spokesmen for the Volgograd government and Sport In said the rain was extraordinary and was dealt with as an emergency.

"This happens once in a hundred years," a Sport In spokesman said.

The Stroytransgaz company, which built the stadium, gave no immediate comment.

Popular children's animated series Rugrats will soon make a comeback in the form of a TV series and a movie.

According to Variety, the revival, featuring characters from the 1990s' show, has got a 26-episode order from Nickelodeon.

Paramount Players will develop the live-action film with CGI characters.

The TV series and the movie will include new adventures of Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Susie and Angelica and will also see new characters joining the series.

Arlene Klasky, Gabor Csupo and Paul Germain, the original creators of the show, will return as executive producers for the TV series.

The production of the new show is underway in California.

"Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures.

"What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can't wait for today's kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals," said Sarah Levy, Chief Operating Officer of Viacom Media Networks and interim president of Nickelodeon.

For the big screen adaptation, David Goodman will pen the script. The movie will be released on November 13, 2020.

"Now feels like the ideal time to reintroduce this iconic cast of characters to a whole new generation of young fans. Kids who grew up with Tommy Pickles and the Rugrats crew will now be able to share that experience with their own children," said Brian Robbins, President of Paramount Players.

Earlier, Blue's Clues had joined the list of latest classic original series brought back for today's generation by Nickelodeon.

Treason against Jon Snow? Sophie Turner says Sansa Stark is 'true leader of Winterfell'

$

Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner has said her on-screen character of Sansa Stark has grown from strength-to-strength and emerged the "true leader of Winterfell".

The 22-year-old actor, who plays the eldest Stark daughter in the HBO's epic fantasy show, said the audience should watch out for the character in the final season next year who is now the in-charge of her destiny.

"She (Sansa) has the strength of her family behind her. She's used Littlefinger for all he has. As she said, 'Thank you for all your lessons'. He has nothing left to give her. So she is so empowered. She has a family behind her. She has Littlefinger, Cersei, Margaery, everyone's wisdom and teachings all behind her.

"She's a real, true leader of Winterfell now. And that's where we first see her as a very protective, empowered lady in charge. It's the first time you ever see her like that, and it's so amazing to see her like that kind of owning her destiny," Turner told DigitalSpy.

From being a meek girl who was abused by King Joffrey Baratheon and Ramsay Bolton, Sansa's part has transformed drastically.

Turner continued, "To be able to take her through the motions of being beaten down, and growing and eventually evolving literally season by season, you see a huge change in her.

"And now we've got to the point where she's this steely, strong, manipulative, intelligent, kind, young woman, and it's completely the opposite of who she was at the beginning of the series."

The eighth and final season of Game of Thrones is expected to air next year.

Samsung Galaxy S10 may come in three sizes, with in-display fingerprint sensor, says analyst Ming-Chi Kuo

Samsung's next flagship smartphone, due early in 2019, could be coming in three separate versions in a bid to broaden its appeal, according to TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

According to a report by Business Insider, the Galaxy S10 will be offered in three variants - 5.8-inch screen, 6.1-inch screen and 6.4-inch screen. The two larger models will include an ultrasonic FOD - ‘fingerprint on display,’ which implies that users will be able to scan their finger by placing it simply on the screen. The smallest model will include a fingerprint scanner towards the side of the device. The company will ‘aggressively’ promote this new feature and it is also expected to be used on Samsung's high-end "A series" devices as well.

Ming-Chi Kuo predicts Samsung to ship 40 million Galaxy S10 devices next year. Also he believes that Samsung could ship 14 million to 16 million Galaxy Note 10 phones next year as well.

Previous reports suggest that the 5.8-inch smartphone will sport a single main camera. The second model, with curved edges and a dual camera, would effectively be a replacement for the Galaxy S9, while a more advanced model, will sport a triple camera, and would replace the Galaxy S9+. If this materializes, Samsung would be a major challenger for Huawei in the smartphone camera field, in which both manufacturers strive to excel.

A fingerprint sensor built into the screen -- technology already mastered by many Chinese manufacturers like Huawei, Vivo and Xiaomi -- should at least be coming to the higher-end Galaxy S10. Plus, Samsung could add facial-recognition technology, similar to that seen in Apple's iPhone X, thus ditching its iris scanner.

This would take the form of a 3D module built into the front-facing camera, bringing improved facial recognition while also optimizing animated emojis. The Galaxy S10 is also expected to be the first smartphone to use the next-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. The Galaxy S10 smartphones are likely to be unveiled at CES 2019 in Las Vegas, January 8-11, 2019.

The previous week, rumour mills were busy churning that popular TV actress and former Bigg Boss 11 contestant Hina Khan is going to be a part of the love saga Kasautii Zindagii Kay 2. In fact, the news of her essaying the role of Komolika, the main antagonist, was also grabbing a lot of eyeballs

But to everyone's dismay, during an interaction with a portal, Hina Khan spoke at length about not being a part of the show. During an interaction with News 18, Hina revealed that these are just rumours.

She stated, "There is nothing like that now. I have not signed any project just yet. I talked to them. But nothing has been signed yet. I can not say anything about this now."

Earlier, producer-director Ekta Kapoor had let out the news about the reboot version of Kasautii Zindagii Kay.

She had taken to her Instagram and written, "With a piece of my broken heart I wrote in 2001 ...17 years later I ‘ reboot’ it dipping it in personal pain and lacing it with experiences of an older me! Bringing back my most successful love saga that ran for 9 years!!! Again I’ll take my broken heart n make it into art!!! #namestobeannounced #waitfortheannouncement"

The mother of the popular show, while talking about Urvashi Dholakia'sKomolika character, had tweeted, "Even though there will b a reboot in her character ... it’ll b a v difficult casting for this iconic antagonist! So first choice will b hopefully d last choice JAI MATA DI. So many sources claiming so many actors in this epic characters casting’ I have approached only one person n she is d ONLY CHOICE."

And is Hina Khan the ONLY choice?

A source had earlier told Bombay Times that the talks have reached an advanced stage and the makers are keen on roping in the actress for the part. The source also said that the actress is expected to sign on the dotted line soon.

Nobody works harder than my sisters and my mom: Kim Kardashian West defends 'self-made billionaire' Kylie Jenner

Reality TV star Kim Kardashian West has come to sister Kylie Jenner's rescue after she came under fire for her Forbes cover in which she was called "the youngest-ever self-made billionaire" at the age of 21.

Kim, 37, said all her siblings are "self-made" and it is unfair to target Jenner as they have never gone to their parents for anything other than a piece of advice.

"I really didn't get it, because she is 'self-made' - we are all 'self-made'. What, because we came from a family that has had success? To me, that doesn't really make sense... I know so many people like that who haven't turned out to be as successful as Kylie. If anything, I've seen the complete opposite.

"Me, Kylie, not one (of the siblings) has ever depended on our parents for anything besides advice. That's how I lived my life with my dad. He never gave me anything. We might have the opportunity, but I've seen it go the complete opposite way. Nobody works harder than my sisters and my mom," the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star told Refinery29.

Jenner's company, Kylie Cosmetics, is estimated to be worth $900 million, according to Forbes. The estimate puts Jenner on track to being "the youngest self-made billionaire ever, male or female" - surpassing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who became a billionaire at age 23.

Several social media users called out the publication for claiming Jenner was "self-made".

But the close-knit family was quick to defend her.

"CONGRATS. Wait I'm posting this again just because!!!! BILLION DOLLAR BABY," Kim also tweeted.

Their mother, Kris Jenner, 62, celebrated the feat on Instagram.

"My beauty on the cover of Forbes Magazine!! I am SO proud of you @kyliejenner and everything you have accomplished. You work so tirelessly on your business, and with so much passion and precision. As a mother, it brings me immense joy to watch you continue to make your @kyliecosmetics dreams a reality!! (sic)" she wrote.

The publication had described Jenner as $900 million Cosmetics Queen.

"At 21, she's set to be the youngest self-made billionaire. Welcome to the era of extreme fame leverage," it said.

Two persons, including a school boy, drowned as incessant rains lashed Saurashtra and south Gujarat regions, with Gir Somnath being among the worst-affected districts in the state, officials said on Tuesday.

According to the officials, 3,500 people have been shifted to safer places in different districts of the state.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, who flew to Gir Somnath from Gandhinagar to hold a review meeting with district officials, was forced to return as the helicopter could not land at the Keshod airstrip due to bad weather, an official said.

He was later flown in a special Air Force helicopter.

One Devendra Chavda (18) drowned in flood waters last night near Bhupgat town in Rajkot district, and efforts were on to trace his body, a Fire department official said.

Sandeep Rathod (7) was washed by the rising waters of the Mini river when he was crossing it on his way back home from his school near Angadh village in Vadodara district, a Nandesari police station official said.

"The incident took place yesterday, and his body was recovered today," he said.

Gir Somnath in Saurashtra has been the worst-hit district, along with Junagadh, Amreli, Jamnagar and Rajkot, while in south Gujarat, Valsad and Navsari district have been badly affected.

According to the officials, over 3,500 people across all the affected districts were relocated to safer places, and over 150 roads were closed as a precautionary measure.

Several villages were being provided drinking water through tankers.

A train running between Una-Delwada stuck near Una town in Gir Somnath district and passengers were rescued by the NDRF, an official of the Western Railway said, adding that some of the long-distance trains are running behind the schedule as heavy rains and waterlogging have hampered their movement.

Many towns in Gir Somnath turned into islands as the district has been witnessing heavy rains for the third consecutive day.

Over 27 dams and reservoirs in Saurashtra region are overflowing as districts like Rajkot (150 mm), Gir Somnath (300mm), Amreli (175 m) have been receiving incessant rainfall since the past 24 hours.

South Gujarat region received 57.27 per cent of the average rainfall till today, even as 115 talukas in south Gujarat and Saurashtra received significant rainfall so far, a state data showed. North Gujarat, including Ahmedabad, has received the lowest rainfall in this season so far.

According to police, Roy was working as a helper of a mason at nearby Anchal for the past three years.

Bihar Cabinet hikes compensation for rape, acid attack victims from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 7 lakh

The Bihar Cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal to increase the compensation amount for rape and acid attack victims in the state to Rs 7 lakh from the existing Rs 3 lakh, a top official said.

Cabinet Secretariat Department's Special Secretary Upendra Nath Pandey said the decision to give nod to the 'Bihar Victim Compensation (Amendment) Scheme 2018', proposed by the law department, was taken in view of directions issued by the Union Home Ministry following the Supreme Court's judgement delivered in February 2016 in this regard.

Last month, the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and the Centre jointly drew up a relief policy for rape and acid attack women victims offering minimum compensation amount of Rs 5 lakh and Rs 7 lakh, respectively.

The Centre had asked all states to devise the compensation amount accordingly.

"The amendment to the Bihar Victim Compensation Scheme, 2014, had become imperative on account of an amendment to the Centre's compensation scheme after the apex court judgement," Pandey explained.

"According to the new scheme, the compensation amount has been increased from the current Rs 3 lakh to Rs 7 lakh for the rape and acid attack victims in the state," he said adding that the amount can be increased by 50% over and above Rs 7 lakh if the victim is below the age of 14 years.

In case of acid attack victims, the scheme has a provision of giving Rs 10,000 per month as compensation for life or a period considered proper by the District Crime Compensation Board if the victim has lost 80% of her eyesight or face has been disfigured up to 80 per cent. However, in no case, the amount can exceed Rs 10,000 per month, the officer said.

The district legal service authority would take a final call on giving compensation amount to acid attack victims, Pandey said.

The Cabinet, in Tuesday's meeting chaired by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, also approved two bills which would be tabled in the five-day monsoon session of the state legislature beginning July 20, the officer said but refused to divulge the details of the bills.
