Eman Ahmed who has lost 100 kgs since she was brought to Mumbai's Saifee Hospital from her hometown Alexandria in Egypt has undergone her first surgery. The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy was conducted on March 7.

"We would not like to operate under intense media pressure," bariatric surgeon Dr Muffazal Lakdawala had said during an earlier press conference. So when the first surgery took place, his team waited for a day before sharing any details.

It was revealed that Eman "had an uneventful surgery and anaesthesia course." She is currently on post-op care.

Eman who was over 500 kgs when she was brought to Mumbai last month has already lost 100 kgs - mainly body fluids - with the help of medicines and bed-side physiotherapy.

Lakdawala's team has revealed that Eman is now on oral fluids and is accepting them well. They would focus on correcting all her associated medical problems so that she can be fit enough to fly back to Egypt as soon as possible.

Eman is in Mumbai with her sister Shaimaa Ahmed who has a toddler back in Alexandria to take care of.

Following bariatric surgery, patients can lose up to 75% of their body fat in a year. For Eman, the doctors hope to make her lose around 200 kgs in the next six months.

NGO to raise awareness about link between consanguineous marriages and disability in children

With an aim to spread awareness among the residents of Shivaji Nagar slum about the link between consanguineous marriages (marriage between people descending from the same ancestor) and disabled children, some residents of the area along with Apnalaya, a non-profit organisation, will soon be conducting an awareness drive.

According to the NGO, people with disability face various difficulties in life ranging from medical treatment and education to daily activities. "These children are incapable of doing certain things, but society lables them as disabled," said Dr Arun Kumar, CEO, Apnalaya

The NGO, which works with differently-abled children in the Shivaji Nagar slum area, conducted a survey on the issue and found that out of the 500 differently- abled children they work with, the parents of 25 per cent had a consanguineous marriage.

Speaking about the survey, Kumar said, “We will be reaching out to the community with the help of the survey conducted in their own area. This will help us spread awareness and ask people to reconsider a consanguineous marriage. We have to work further on the cause to empower the community to rehabilitate people with disabilities.”

Apnalaya has been looking at identifying social, economic, and cultural factors that contribute to consanguineous marriages, which has been identified as one of the causes. “We plan to guide people to spread awareness on the issue among other residents, through various activities,” said Kumar.

An RTI response from the Public Health Department of ME-Ward in May 2016 revealed that the population of disabled persons in the ward is 1,596.

“The survey was conducted in August and September 2016. Of the 25 per cent cases of consanguineous marriages we came across, we took in-depth interviews and group discussions of 40 per cent of them. Research results suggest that the major reasons behind indulging in consanguineous marriages are — families are acquainted to each other, a family tradition of doing so, daughter remains a part of the extended family,” said Kumar. The survey also states that 62 per cent of the men belonging to the sample group spoke in favour of consanguineous marriages.

WATCH: Messi celebrating Barcelona's win with fans show how much it mattered to the God of football

Lionel Messi's celebration post Sergi Roberto's 95th minute winner on Thursday was one for the ages. Barcelona completed one of the most extraordinary comebacks in European football history to knock Paris Saint-Germain out of the Champions League with a 6-1 victory that rewrote the record books.

Even as Barca's entire team, their support staff, and some stray fans from the crowd sprinted towards Roberto after he scored, Messi went straight to the Catalan-faithful behind the goal to celebrate with them. It was a poignant moment that showed how much winning with Barcelona meant to the genius.

Here's Messi celebrating after the winning goal on Thursday:

No team had ever overturned a four-goal deficit in a knockout tie, but Roberto's stoppage-time goal completed a 6-5 aggregate win that sparked delirious scenes of celebration inside the Nou Camp and sent Barca through to the last eight.

Edinson Cavani looked to have wrecked Barcelona's dreams by volleying in an away goal to make the score 3-1 but two late strikes from Neymar set up a thrilling finale before Roberto sealed the Spanish side's unlikely triumph.

"This is a crazy, unique sport. Children and adults here tonight will never forget what happened," Barca coach Luis Enrique told reporters. "I dedicate this win to all Barca fans who kept faith in us. We were massively criticised after the first leg."

SC asks Vijay Mallya whether he truthfully disclosed assets

$

The Supreme Court on Thursday put forth searching questions to liquor baron Vijay Mallya on the disclosure of his assets to the court.

A bench comprising Justices A K Goel and U U Lalit asked Mallya if he had been truthful after a consortium of banks led by the SBI alleged that $40 million was transferred by Mallya to his three children in complete violation of the Karnataka High Court order. Moreover, the fact that $40 million was received by Mallya from a United Kingdom-based company Diageo PLC was not disclosed before the court here, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, appearing for the banks, alleged.

Taking note of the allegation, the bench asked the counsel for Mallya to respond to the AG's query whether "he truthfully disclosed his assets or not". It also wanted to know as to whether by transferring $40 million to his children, he violated the Karnataka High Court order in this regard or not. The Karnataka High Court had restrained Mallya from transferring or alienating any movable and immovable assets to any third party. The bench would resume hearing at 2 PM.

Some banks are at risk of defualting coupon payments: Fitch

$

Despite regulatory forbearance measures and government's capital support, some lenders are at risk of skipping coupon payments on the money raised earlier, an international rating agency warned on Thursday.

"Some banks remain at risk of skipping coupon payments on capital instruments over the next couple of years; despite measures by the Reserve Bank to ease pressures, and capital injections by government into state-run banks," Fitch Ratings said in a note. The agency warned that mid-sized banks are "most at risk" of breaching capital triggers. The report did not name any lenders, though.

The report said distributable reserves at small-to mid-sized state-run banks were down by one-third in the April-December 2016 period compared to 2014-15 which reflects persistent losses and weak internal capital generation. It further said five state-run banks suffered losses which were equivalent to over 30% of distributable reserves in the period. The Reserve Bank's recent decision to allow banks to make additional tier 1 coupon payments from statutory reserves may have helped mitigate short-term coupon-deferral risks, but state-run banks' reserves are "likely to continue falling", the report said.

The agency said many of the regulatory changes done by the central bank over the past few years are not unique to India, but their timing "suggests the RBI has felt pressure to provide headroom to state banks". On the government's capital support, the agency said some banks are also at risk of missing coupon payments on capital instruments as a result of breaching minimum capital requirements.

Total capital adequacy ratio of 12 banks was at or below the 11.5-percent minimum that will be a prerequisite for payment of coupons on both legacy and Basel-III AT1 capital instruments by 2018-19, and 11 banks had core equity ratios at or below the 8% minimum that will be required to make coupon payments on AT1 instruments by fiscal 2019. Domestic banks require $90 billion in capital till fiscal 2019 and the state-run banks will be accounting for 80% of this and will have to rely on government for the capital in absence of market-based alternatives, it said.

"The $10.4 billion that the government has earmarked for capital injections into state-run banks is unlikely to be enough to support balance-sheet growth," the agency concluded.

Karan Johar or Kangana Ranaut - whose side are you on? VOTE NOW!

$

Karan Johar and Kangana Ranaut are engaged in a war of words. After Kangana's attacking behaviour on Koffee with Karan grabbing eyeballs and headlines at the same time, KJo didn't stop.

While Kangana called him the 'movie mafia' and a 'snooty flag bearer of nepotism', when Karan was asked about it at a public event, he clarified his stance in an extremely curt way. He clearly said he doesn't understand 'why Kangana always plays the victim card'. Not just that, Karan even slammed her claims and asked her 'to leave the industry' if she's so miffed with it.

Not known to take things lying down, now Kangana has hit out at Karan again. In a long conversation with Mumbai Mirror, Kangana blasted Karan and said, "what is pertinent here is: why is Karan Johar trying to shame a woman for being a woman? What is this about the 'woman card' and the 'victim card'? This kind of talk is demeaning to all women, particularly the vulnerable because they are the ones who really need to use them."

She continued, "I use every card possible. At the workplace, it's the badass card to fight cutthroat competition. With my family and loved ones, it's the love card. When fighting the world, it's the dignity card, and for a seat in a bus, it's the woman card. What is important to understand is that we are not fighting people, we are fighting a mentality. I am not fighting Karan Johar, I am fighting male chauvinism."

And about leaving Bollywood, Kangana made another strong statement, "Also, the Indian film industry is not a small studio given to Karan by his father when he was in his early 20s. That is just a small molecule. The industry belongs to every Indian and is highly recommended for outsiders like me whose parents were too poor to give me a formal training. I learnt on the job and got paid for it, using the money to educate myself in New York. He is nobody to tell me to leave it. I'm definitely not going anywhere, Mr Johar."

While the two are engaging in this battle, we wonder whose side are you on? Tell us who you think is right. Vote now!

Aamir Khan has been great friends with RajkumarHirani. They have given two back to back blockbusters in the form of 3 Idiots and PK. Now, Raju is gearing up for the big biopic on SanjayDutt which he had been planning for 2 years now.

It's finally gone on floors and Ranbir Kapoor has started resembling Sanjay Dutt as well. But did you know Aamir Khan too was offered the film? No, not Ranbir's role, Aamir was offered dad Sunil Dutt's role.

But Aamir refused to play a dad to Ranbir on screen and hence opted out of the film. He felt it wouldn't suit the character as the age difference between him and Ranbir is only about 16-17 years. Okay, we get that!

RBI opposes $1.17 billion Tata-DoCoMo settlement

$
0
0

The Reserve Bank of India on Wednesday opposed the $1.17 billion deal between Tata Sons Ltd and  Japan's NTT DoCoMo, reported Economic Times

Tata Sons and DoCoMo had made a joint application in the Delhi High Court to resolve the matter, had the hearing on Wednesday.

RBI argued that the settlement would lead to transferring of shares which would be illegal.

Considering that both the companies had agreed to settle the dispute through the payment, Justice S Murlidhar questioned if the RBI could oppose the award's enforment.

The Delhi High Court asked the RBI whether its permission was required if there is no other objection to the enforcement of the $1.17 billion arbitral award in favour of Japanese telecom major NTT Docomo in its case with Tata Sons.

"Is RBI's special permission required for paying damages for failing to fulfill contractual obligations? Say yes or no. If yes, then quote the circular, regulation or rule under which permission is required. If not, then say no," Justice S Muralidhar said and added, "make your stand clear".

The query from the court came as the RBI opposed the consent terms arrived at between Tata Sons and Docomo with regard to the enforceability of the award granted in favour of the Japanese telecom major by the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA) in June 2016.

The RBI said it will submit its stand before the court on the next date of hearing on March 14.

Tata has already deposited the amount of $1.17 billion with the Delhi High Court.

Tata and Docomo have decided to settle their two-year old dispute regarding their telecom joint venture, Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTSL), with the Indian company withdrawing its objections to the enforcement of the award.

The Japanese company in turn has said it will "suspend its related enforcement proceedings in the United Kingdom and the United States" for a period of six months.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has objected to the consent terms saying if Docomo fails to succeed in enforcement of its award in India, it cannot say it will try and enforce it in some other jurisdiction after six months.

The court, however, disagreed with the contention and termed it "absurd". It said that if Docomo does not succeed here, it can take the award for enforcement of the award to the US or the UK and "RBI has no jurisdiction outside India".

"How can you object to enforceability anywhere else in the world? If they (Tata) have assets anywhere else, they (Docomo) can move a court there for the enforcement of the award. There is no law prohibiting it," the judge said.

The judge said "all I will say is that objections to enforceability of the award stand withdrawn. ... So it won't be a precedent as I have not adjudicated on the correctness of the tribunal's ruling."

The court asked RBI whether it will still say that special permission was required for remission of the award amount if the central bank fails to succeed in its intervention application filed in the matter. RBI has sought to intervene in the matter contending that that the shareholding agreement between the two companies permitting transfer of funds abroad was illegal as it violated Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) Regulations.

Tata, in the past, has been consistently maintaining that while it has every intention to pay the arbitral award to Docomo, it has been unable to do so due to lack of permission from RBI. The issue pertains to Docomo's exit from the joint venture, TTSL, for alleged breach of agreement by the Tatas and the subsequent enforcement of the damages awarded by LCIA in favour of the Japanese company for it.

The matter had gone to arbitration as Tata was unable to find a buyer for Docomo's 26.5% stake in TTSL for 50% of the acquisition price, which came to around Rs 58.45 per share, and the Japanese company was not willing to accept the "fair market value" of Rs 23.44 that the Indian company was willing to pay as per the shareholding agreement.

Under the agreement between the two companies, either Tata had to find a buyer for Docomo's shares at 50% of acquisition price or buy its shares at fair market value, both leading to transfer of funds outside India, which RBI has termed as illegal. In November 2009, Docomo had acquired 26.5% stake in TTSL for about Rs 12,740 crore. The two had also agreed that in case Docomo exits the venture within five years, it will be paid a minimum 50% of the acquisition price through the purchase of its shares by a buyer who would be found by Tata.

The other option was Tata purchasing the shares at fair market value. LCIA had awarded the damages in favour of Docomo for Tata's alleged breach of the agreement regarding buying of the Japanese company's stake on its exit. Docomo moved the Delhi High Court for enforcement of the award after Tata cited refusal of permission by RBI to make the payment. Docomo in an affidavit had said that RBI's permission was not required for paying the damages.

WATCH: Misbah-ul-Haq does a Yuvraj Singh, smashes 6 sixes in 6 balls in Hong Kong T20 Blitz

$

Just a few days after being retained as Pakistan's Test team captain for the tour of West Indies, veteran batsman Misbah-ul-Haq displayed what he can do it in the shortest format of the game, as he hammered six sixes in six balls for his team Hong Kong Island United in the Hong Kong T20 Blitz on Thursday.

It all started when Hung Hom Jaguars pacer Imran Arif was lifted for two sixes in the last two balls of the 19th over. The carnage started with Arif bowling a full toss on Misbah's pads in the fifth ball of his over, which the Pakistani veteran sent over the boundary ropes with aplomb. His last delivery made no difference either, as Misbah sent it out of the park again, this time down the ground. In the last over bowled by Ashley Caddy, Misbah completed the mayhem. Getting the strike back on the second delivery, the right-hander hit Caddy for four consecutive sixes to stun the crowd.

The no-mercy knock by Misbah (82 of 37 balls) which was decorated with seven sixes and four fours saw him guide his team to a mammoth total of 216 for six. The Jaguars in their chase, however, were no match for the Hong Kong Island as they were restricted to 183 for eight with Jonathan Foo's gritty knock of 77 going in vain.

The father of Saifulla, the terrorist who was killed on Wednesday, thanked Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday for praising him.

Singh had praised him in the Lok Sabha for refusing to accept his son's body and calling him a terrorist. Responding to this, Saifulla's father Sartaj said, "I want to thank him (Rajnath Singh), I want to tell all Indians that the minister respects the common man, (Unka (HM) shukriya, ye sandesh purey India ke liye hona chahiye humare mantri chotey-chotey logon ko izzat dete hain-Sartaj,Saifulla's father)."

"The government is proud of Mohammed Sartaj (Saifullah's father) and I am sure the entire House will be proud as he refused to take his body, saying he betrayed his country," Rajnath Singh said while addressing the second leg of the Budget Session in the Lok Sabha.

Earlier on Wednesday, Sartaj refused to accept his son's body saying "a traitor" was no son of theirs. "A traitor can't be our son. We are Indians, we were born here, our forefathers were born here. One who indulges in anti-national activities can't be our son... we won't accept his body," Sartaj said.

Saifullah was killed by commandos in a house on the outskirts of Lucknow on Wednesday morning after an exchange of fire with the police for about 12 hours.

After accusing BipashaBasu and her husband Karan Singh Grover for unprofessional behaviour, Ronita Sharma Rekhi, an official of India Pakistan London fashion show is planning to call a press conference to "expose her".

Rekhi claims that Bips, who was supposed to be the showstopper at the fashion show, refused to come out of her hotel room. The actresses' fans have been trolling Rekhi ever since she made the accusations against the actress.

Rekhi has now cancelled her return ticket from London to Mumbai. Bipasha's team has, on the other hand, blamed Rekhi's team for being unprofessional. Now, we already know both sides of the story. Who do you think is right?

A special NIA court in Punjab declared Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar and three others as 'Proclaimed Offenders' in the terror attack on the Pathankot  airbase, reports IANS. The Pathankot airbase was attacked on January  2, 2016.

Azhar's brother Mufti Rauf Asghar and associates Shahid Latif and Kashif Jan are the other three declared as 'Proclaimed Offenders'.

Since 2016, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court has been hearing the case. The agency had issued red corner notices against the terrorists for them to stand trial.

On Thursday, China said it will soon take a call on India's demand to designate JeM chief Masood Azhar as global terrorist by the UN as it is investigating his terror activities, a senior functionary of Communist Party of China said.

China had put a technical hold twice last year when India moved an application to ban Azhar after the Pathankot terrorist attack.  Beijing again repeated its action this year when the US moved the application at the UN.
