I-League: Mohun Bagan's title dreams suffer another jolt, barely manage to hold Mumbai FC

$
0
0

Relegation-wary Mumbai FC almost pulled off a spectacular upset before Mohun Bagan rode on a Balwant Singh strike in the dying moments for a thrilling 2-2 draw in an I-League football match here today.

Mohun Bagan drew the first blood from a Sony Norde corner in the 12th minute when an unmarked Pritam Kotal headed the ball home after being fed by captain Katsumi Yusa from the near post at the Rabindra Sarovar Stadium.

In a stunning turnaround, Mumbai FC scored two goals in two minutes with Khangebam Thoi Singh striking the equaliser in the 20th before Victorino Fernandes handed them the lead. Pratesh Shirodkar had a wayward shot from the right as Thoi showed fine reflexes to loop the ball over Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Debjit Majumder to open their account.

Before Mohun Bagan could settle down, Mumbai FC snatched the lead with Reagan Singh setting up Fernandes with a clincial cross inside the box. The Mohun Bagan centre backs Eduardo Ferreira and Anas Edathodika were once again caught napping leaving a big gap as Fernandes easily went past them and tapped the ball in for their lead.

The Mariners' defensive woes continued as Mumbai almost made it 3-1 at the halfway mark with Fernandes in the thick of action in front of Eduardo and he only managed to loop the ball skywards in front of an open net. Mohun Bagan, on the other hand, missed a slew of chances with a listless display in the midfield and the Santosh Kashyap-coached side sniffed their first win in 11 matches.

But a moment of brilliance from Norde in the 89th minute undid Mumbai's fine effort. The star Haitian sent in a fine cross to the far post where Balwant timed his header perfectly to find the net for their much-awaited equaliser.
With four minutes added, Mohun Bagan had a last shot at goal with Jeje Lalpekhlua, but his acrobatic effort flew over. Earlier, in the 75th minute, Balwant was unlucky as his header hit the post.

Mohun Bagan also suffered an injury blow when their main goalkeeper Debjit was stretchered off the ground after being hit while getting hold of the ball in a battle with Fernandes as Shilton Paul was brought in. Having lost their last round to Churchill Brothers, Mohun Bagan slipped further in the title race after dropping points as they are seven points behind leaders Aizawl FC with two matches in hand.
Mumbai, on the other hand, remained in the relegation zone with 10 points from 13 matches.

Warran Buffet, Narayana Murthy-promoted insurance companies get Irdai nod to set up shop in India

$

Insurance regulator Irdai has cleared different levels of licences to a host of new players in the insurance industry in non-life and reinsurance spaces in its recently held board meeting.

However, not a single licence was cleared by the insurance regulator for any player on life space as it didn't receive any such application this time.

Insurance and reinsurance companies promoted by billionaire investors like Warren Buffet and Narayana Murthy have been given regulatory clearances by the Irdai for their Indian foray, industry sources told PTI here today.

Gen Re, one of the reinsurance multinational companies, promoted by Warren Buffet has received the second level of regulatory clearances or R2, while Acko General Insurance, a domestic firm backed by Infosys founder NR Narayana Murthy, has received preliminary licence to set up their operations in the country, the sources added.

Irdai in its board meeting held on March 3 has cleared a different level of regulatory clearances to the new companies intending to enter country's insurance industry.

Domestic firms like Dewan and Edelweiss have also been given second level of regulatory clearances or R2. However, they will be able to kick off their operations in the country on receiving the final approval or R3 licence only.

However, not a single licence was cleared by the insurance regulator on life insurance space for a simple reason that it didn't receive any such application from the industry which was not only having a long gestation period, but also huge capital-intensive one.

Buffet's Gen Re is likely to join other global top reinsurers like Munich Re, Swiss Re, Lloyd's, SCOR, RGA and XL Catlin to kickstart its direct operations in the country in form of a branch.

Gen Re has an exposure for the Indian market in terms of life and health business on an offshore basis and has service company in the country since 2006.

The global reinsurer is expecting to receive the final regulatory licence-R3-soon and is eyeing for April 1 renewal for starting its business.
Acko General Insurance was registered on November 3.

Three directors were mentioned by the company in a filing at the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, including Varun Dua, Ruchi Deepak and Deepak Angrula.

Lombard, one of the subsidiaries of Fairfax Financials which is owned by Canada-based Indian billionaire Prem Watsa is already having an existing joint venture-ICICI Lombard General Insurance in the country where Lombard holds 36 per cent in the joint venture.

Irdai has also given its preliminary licence to Fairfax for its second joint venture with another Indian company, Oben Insurance with some rider.

At present, there are 24 players on the life insurance space which include LIC and 30 players on the non-life insurance space which include four state-owned, two specialised and six stand-alone health insurers.

Post her SHOCKING allegations against Dhanush, Suchitra Karthik to head to London for treatment?

$

The past week has been quite heavy on certain superstars of the South Film Industry as they had been dragged into a controversy when Rj-turned-singer Suchitra Karthik shared some of their private pictures on her official Twitter handle.

At first she claimed that her account had been hacked but later apparently she started posting nude and objectionable videos of some south actresses after that. Allegedly, she even claimed that actor Dhanush and singer Anirudh had sexually assaulted her after drugging her drink. Post that, she allegedly made her Twitter account private.

After that, several Twitter accounts sprang up in her name and started sharing objectionable content on the micro blogging site. When the matter escalated and turned into a big controversy, Suchitra's husband posted a clarification video message, saying that she's going through a certain emotional stress. "People have been mentioning her tweets in not so positive way. I have been honest enough to tell them, it is indicative of a certain emotional state we are all trying to understand and address,” he had stated in the video.

Now, if the latest reports are to be believed, then Suchitra is apparently being taken to London for treatment. Reportedly, she will be enrolled in a rehabilitation program there. As per the report on a leading daily, her family has not yet figured out her treatment plan.

In what has been turning out to be one of the biggest scandals in the history of the South industry, the question whether it was Suchitra who leaked the questionable content on social media or was it done by a hacker or some other person, still remains unanswered. Watch this space for more...

This International Women's Day, women tell us what they REALLY want!

$
0
0

This Women’s Day, I do not want to ask men to change their perception of women. But, I want to urge women to change perception of themselves and many like them. As women, we have a mental block of doing certain things, only because they’re meant for men to do. No, stand up for yourself and have faith in yourself. We are living in 2017 but we still do not feel as empowered as how we should be. We are definitely in a better place, but not in the best place. And to get there, we mustn’t let anything hold us back. We need to stop letting any gender bias impede us from doing what we want, which is when we will be able to see the same change towards women by the others too. Mic drop.

— Savleen Khurana, Executive, GoLiOpinion

If chivalry means a man gets more power in a relationship, then I would much rather open my own doors!

— Bushra Madhiya, Makeup and Hairstylist, BBLUNT India.

This woman's day I'd like people to not use the term housewife and homemaker as an insult. And understand the value of their hardwork on days other than Women's Day too. While we are at it, equal salaries too.

— Krishna Sathian, Student

One day, just one day, I would like a break from the public compulsive masturbator, the predatory groper, the sexual beast. Because they never go away.

— Kimberly Thomas, Medical Student

I need the men to take a step back and let the women lead this year. Frankly, we have achieved and proven ourselves time and again, showing that we are capable of fulfilling our own goals. Break the stereotype that women are born only to cook, clean and give birth. Yes, we do give birth, that's how men were created in the first place. Like Beyonce says.... Who run the world? GIRLS!

— Aashna Mehta, Social Media Manager, Flawless Allure

This Women's Day, I want a change of thought to come about in women, I want women to support each other instead of bringing each other down. Women are constantly slut-shaming, body-shaming and justifying patriarchy, I would like for women to unite so that we can stand stronger together!

— Salome Soni, Student

I want people to change their perception of women, we are still viewed as the weaker, fairer sex. I hope to be recognised for my dedication, hard work and diligence, I've earned it.

— Nazeeha Agboatwalla, Assistant Manager, Deloitte

STOP treating us like a weak minority. We are way above your sympathy and solicitude. We aren't the women that need men, think about it long and hard, it's men who need women.

— Pooja Dani, Marketing Executive

I want to live in a world where there is more outrage over rape and violence against women than a visible bra strap or packet of sanitary napkin.

— Aiman S, Psychology Major, Mithibai College

I'm pretty happy with the world and men in general actually. Rather than complaining I'd like to thank all the fathers, brothers and guy friends who support, encourage and love us in the new wave of woman empowerment. I've paved my way through my career and life and they have never been a hindrance to me thankfully. They've always been supportive and helpful. And I hope this kind of support is extended all around.

— Palak Parnoor Kaur, Photographer

I feel I just want the rules to be equal for men and women, whether it be payment, responsibilities, deadlines, clothes etc there should  be no discrimination.

— Lehen Gafoor, Entrepreneur

I just want to say to all the women: never doubt that you are valuable, powerful and deserving of every opportunity in the world. We are women. We are free, empowering, fearless and impossible to conquer. We have the ability to love infinitely and destruct endlessly. Do NOT underestimate us. We are limitless.

— Aastha Mehta, Fashion Writer

I never want to hear the phrase, "You are a girl, act like it!" What does that even mean? Is everyone born with terms and conditions on how to act? I think I missed the memo.

— Anisha Khanna, Intern, Himalaya Herbals (UAE)

I don't want men to respect women because we are their daughters, sisters, mothers or wives. I want men to respect women because we are humans, I'm not going to fight for women's rights, I'm fighting for my human rights.

— Saeema Fahim, Entrepreneur

Remind yourself that it's OK not to be perfect. Quit staring, it's just vitiligo.

On Women's Day, India Inc rolls out red carpet for women staff & customers

Using occasions to maximum advantage doesn't end at festivities. Instead, what gives many companies a chance to leverage on these special days is the exclusivity and frequency they comes with. One such day is today— International Women's day.

This time, it's raining offers from the very skies. From Air India's ‘All Women Operated’ flights’ to SpiceJet celebrating International Women’s Day 'in style' by reserving special seats for solo female travellers, many Indian airlines are keen on making helping women fly. The budget carrier includes options like free upgrades, exclusive seating arrangements and freebies, to mark the day's significance.

The all women crew isn't just by Air India alone. Even Vistara and Jet Airways have rolled out a slew of initiatives. While Vistara is launching #VistaraWomanFlyer service and is inaugurating Mumbai-Amritsar route on International Women’s Day with all-women crew, Jet Airways has outlined a special scheme which rewards women travellers with a flat 10% savings while booking flights across its entire network.

Under Meru's ‘Ride Planner’, expectant mothers can schedule their rides for next 15 days at a single go.

Big Bazaar is gifting vouchers worth Rs 1000 for those who shop for Rs 2000 or more. “After all, what better way to make a woman happy than to spoil her with great shopping!,” claims its press release.

For buying a Datsun redi-GO car on this day, the company is offering a special benefit of Rs 8000 on the purchase to its female customers.

Speaking of finances, the largest Indian bank, State Bank of India has launched a new employee-centric facility to enable its employees to work from home using mobile devices to address any urgent requirement the employee may have, that prevents their travelling to work.

Even T-Hub has launched a international startup initiative in India, the Smart Women Angels Network (SWAN). Through the move, T-Hub, a startup incubator set up by the Telangana government, is helping to create a network of women angel investors under SWAN, which has its roots in Barcelona.

In this rush to celebrate, brands make a place for 'time' to be enjoyed. Citizen Watches (India) has unveiled Citizen Eco Drive EX1484-81A and Eco Drive EM0502-86P as “an ode to the modern women.” They claim “these tastefully crafted watches are a blend of beauty, femininity and modernity.”

Besides these campaigns, the companies are up and running to pamper the seemingly talkative ones. Vodafone India's #ConnectedSheCan campaign is offering to scale up its ‘Reconnect’ programme to support women going back to work after career breaks, engaging women to use technology in order to encourage gender diversity and women empowerment. It also launched Smart Snehidi programme, Sakhi, Project Samridhi and BOLTRED towards this goal.

In a bid to promote health, Dabur India is hosting a special ‘Yoga @ the Workstation’ classes for its women employees to help them reduce work-related stress and inspire them towards a better work-life balance along with insights on nutrition.

Innovation is key to put FMCG growth on fast track, experts say

$
0
0

Innovation will be a key driver to re-ignite growth in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, which has seen a slowdown in the last three years, according to industry experts.

"One of the drivers of growth for the industry in the next 5 to 10 years is innovation. We, as a sector, haven't innovated enough. The biggest innovation has come from people outside the traditional FMCG marketers," said Marico Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Saugata Gupta.

He was speaking at the CII FMCG summit here.

Citing Patanjali's disruption in the FMCG space, he said, "Patanjali is a wake-up call for industry. This disruption will shake us from some kind of complacency and perhaps the realisation for any industry or company that what got us here today will not get us to next level." The growth of the FMCG industry, which was around 20%, has come down to 7-8% over the last three years. According to market research firm Nielsen, the per capita FMCG consumption in India is $29, while its share of GDP from FMCG standpoint is 2%.

"In the last three years where the industry has seen recessionary growth trends, it coincided with a period where we had deflationary trend in the market.

"At this time, innovation should have been the key.

But the innovation rates have come down from 16,000 launches to 8,000 launches per annum," said Godrej Consumer Products Business Head India and SAARC Sunil Kataria.

Echoing similar sentiment, Nestle India Chairman and Managing Director Suresh Narayanan said, "The level of innovation has come down.

There is enormous opportunity in terms of innovation. Some of the companies were once pioneers of innovation buy have become laggards now. Somewhere along the line, something seems to have got morphed." Companies need to identify the trends and innovate products around them, according to Tata Global Beverages Chairman Harish Bhat.

"In any generation, there are 3-4 broad trends and if we align to those trends, we can offer the consumer products and services based on these trends. We need to innovate around these trends and provide products and services," he said.

REVEALED: What went wrong between Sidharth Shukla and the makers of Dil Se Dil Tak!

$

SidharthShukla is slowly turning out to be the new tantrum king on telly ville. While Karan Patel had the crown, Sidharth is not far.

The actor who had signed up as the male lead for Colors' new show Dil Se Dil Tak has been asked to leave the show. Reason? His unacceptable behaviour, regular delays and tantrums on the sets. Yes, Sidharth allegedly has been kicked out of the show.

According to a Spotboye report, "Sidharth’s tantrums have gotten out of control. The reasons are far too many. Recently while shooting the show on Mira Road in Mumbai, he stopped the shoot for two-and-a-half hours. Sidharth complained that his vanity was smaller than Rashami’s and refused to shoot till he got a vanity as big as hers. The scene was ready and Rashami was waiting for him but Sidharth refused to budge. The production crew then had to run helter-skelter and arrange a vanity for him."

That's not all. He finds several new reasons to delay the shoot, the article states. "Another time, Sidharth stopped the shoot with the complaint that the microwave in his vanity was broken.Sidharth spends most of his time in his vanity and does not respond to any phone calls."

He also extends his lunch hours, which leaves the crew including Rashami Desai, his co-star fuming. This has not gone down well with the makers who had reprimanded the Balika Vadhu actor for his bad behaviour. But it seems their warning fell on deaf ears. This thing continued and now, the makers decided to call for a meeting to discuss the whole issue.

Guess what Sid did. He skipped the meeting totally and now, the makers have hence kicked him out of the show. The hunt for a replacement is on and if this behaviour continues, soon Sid will be out of work.

Vidya Balan is one actress who's known to have played strong, women-centric characters in her films. With her latest outing Begum Jaan, she's back with another such role.

After giving us the first look poster of Begum Jaan, which introduces Vidya, the makers of the film have just release the second poster of the film. While the first poster established Vidya's characters, the second one introduces her family to us.

The tag line of the recent poster reads, "Lived as whores, fought as queens” which is quite intriguing. The movie is apparently a Hindi adaptation of the Bengali film Rajkahini.

Vidya also informed in her tweet that the trailer of the film will be out on March 14.

Last week, it was one woman who ruled the stage on The Kapil Sharma Show. Anushka Sharma was like a one woman army completely. While the dimpled heroine came to promote her next Phillauri, DiljitDosanjh gave the show a miss.

Now, after Anushka, we hear 9 women will be making their appearances in the next episode of the show. Kapil will be shooting for the episode soon.

Who are the 9 women? Guess guess. Well, the entire gang of Begum Jaan that includes 9 actresses will be shooting for the episode with Vidya Balan taking the lead. Vidya plays the titular role in the Srijit Mukherjee film, that's a Hindi remake of the National Award winning Bengali film Rajkahini.

This will certainly be a BIG episode for sure. Previously, the entire Kaabil team had come on the show together but now, this will be a record in itself.

Chee-chee, NOT mast-mast: Why we HATE the rehashed version of the popular 'Mohra' song!

$
0
0

I'm being made a Mohra to take on the Mustafa-fuelled Machine. Nothing personal against Mr I-Forgot-His-Face and his dad and uncle-in-white. I'm just troubled with the obscene amounts of money flung at set designers who trained in Gurgaon, a Fugly actress and a choreographer, who we imagine gave up trying to make Master Burmawalla dance.

Here's the trouble with the Cheez Badi track from Machine. It's going to go down in history as a bad song made worse. Tune-tinkerer Tanishq Bagchi has 'programmed' this track, has original singer Udit Narayan for company, done away with Kavita Krishnamurthy and replaced her with Neha Kakkar. Club song, ergo, item singer, right? Right!

That tagline, for starters. Some things may forever be mast-mast. It just won't be your song. I actually went back and listened to that qawwali club number from Mohra. As improbably inane the costumes were back then, I couldn't get over how correct they got the lighting and the ugly f***s that throng such places. The extras playing two gangsters in their bad wigs, switching briefcases and giving each other thumbs-ups, couldn't be more blatant about their shady business. But at least, that song was woven in as part of the story.

Here, Mustafa is perched on a bar-stool, checking out his main gal, Kiara Advani as she shimmies her way through the song - in a vintage car, in ankle-deep water, braving dangerously low chandeliers. He does thrust (as I'm guessing he must), looks on with lust, and raises some dust with the determined intention of the classic Bollywood villain.

And that's not even the worst part about this video. It's that Udit Narayan, one of the few remaining singers from the 90s people still respect, deigned to be a part of this track. He's sincere, but the generation gap shows. His natural pitch sounds jarring against the heavy doses of what passes as dubstep and thump-thump jhankaar beats in Bollywood these days. Composer Viju Shah must laugh at the irony of it. His Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast from Mohra is supposed to be a copy of the qawwali standard Dum Mast Qalandar. Making Cheez Badi a copy of a copy.

While Kiara ditches Raveena Tandon Thadani's virginal whites for a seductress's sizzling red number, she is not a shade on the thumka queen. Mustafa is no Akshay Kumar, either. But you knew that already!

PCB finally gives a timeline for Misbah to retire

The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Shahryar Khan has conveyed to Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq that the board wants him to retire after the tour to the West Indies in March-April.

Shahryar retained Misbah as captain for the three-Test series on the West Indies tour after the senior batsman informed the PCB that he wanted to carry on playing for Pakistan. "I have spoken to Misbah and discussed his future. I told him he needs to decide his future. He said he will come back to me after reviewing his form and performance in the PSL. He contracted me last week and told me he was available so I have retained him as captain," Shahryar said.

"But at the same time it is a fact that during the tour, he will turn 43 and I don't see him continuing to play on after the tour," he added. Shahryar, 82, asked Misbah to consider his future with the Pakistan team after the national team's straight Test losses in New Zealand and Australia this winter. The PCB chief said he had decided to retain Misbah as captain for the West Indies tour keeping in mind his services to Pakistan cricket and also since he wanted to end his career on a high.

Shahryar was the only key official of the Pakistan cricket think-tank that included chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, head coach Mickey Arthur and other senior officials to cast his vote in favour of retaining Misbah for the upcoming tour. "It is strange but the PCB chief said since he had a commitment with Misbah he will continue for the tour," a source said.

Shahryar also said that people should not harbour high hopes of international cricket returning to Pakistan soon because of the successful hosting of the PSL final in Lahore. "The PSL final went smoothly but it is just a small step towards the eventual return of international cricket to Pakistan. It will take time and we are at the moment doing our best to get the Asian Test teams to come to Pakistan.

"The positive is that by holding the PSL final smoothly we showed everyone that we are capable of providing the best security for visiting teams. But I still think we can't expect things to turn around after just one match and it will take time," said Shahryar.

An alleged terrorist, suspected to have been influenced by the ISIS, was killed here early Wednesday after a 12-hour police operation in the wake of the Ujjain-Bhopal train blast.

Saifullah's body was found with weapons lying next to him when the doors of the house where he was holed up since Tuesday afternoon were opened at the end of the operation, ADGP (Law and Order) Daljit Chaudhary told a press conference here.

The encounter came as Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh police teams carried out arrests of several "seld-radicalised" persons suspected to be linked to the train blast in Shajapur in MP on Tuesday in which ten persons were injured.

Among the suspects held are Kanpur residents Mohammed Faisal Khan, Mohammed Imran alias 'Bhai Jaan' and Danish, who are believed to be brothers, according to police officials.

Police have also arrested Fakr-e-Alam alias Rishu from Etawah and Atiq Muzaffar, a resident of Kanpur, who allegedly was leading the group. Another person identified as Shailendra has also been held from Auraiya, officials said. (PTI)

Makers of Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah LASH OUT at Bhavya Gandhi, call him 'unprofessional'!

TaarakMehtaKaOoltahChashmah has been in news for all wrong reasons for the last one week. Bhavya Gandhi who played the young Tapu on the show quit and then, the noted playwright TaarakMehta who wad the inspiration behind the show, passed away.

The makers have found a replacement for Bhavya on the show. Raj Anadkat will be playing the new Tapu and he has started shooting as well.

But recently, when an online portal got in touch with Bhavya's mother asking her the reason behind his exit, she revealed that Bhavya has landed up a plump role in a film and has been getting a lot of movie offers, which is why he decided to step down. Producer Asit Modi is not too happy with this.

Asit told Daily Bhaskar, "Honestly, it was sad to see Bhavya quitting our show when we needed him the most. I was like a father figure to him and I supported him throughout these years. He signed a Gujarati movie without informing us. I did not interfere in it as long as my show did not suffer. We were shooting a special Republic Day episode and Tappu was required for it. Surprisingly, Bhavya refused to shoot. I was disheartened to see his behavior towards me and my team. Throughout these years, I always cooperated with him, but one cannot bear this kind of unprofessional behaviour. We had no other option rather than replacing him with a new face."

Raj has entered the show and now, the focus will be on him. "It seems like fame and success has gone into his head. But he should not forget that it was Tappu’s character which made him so popular. Anyway, I have no grudges against him and now my whole concentration will be on Raj and Tappu Sena," Asit told the website.

It's like a death of a relationship: Shweta Rohira on separation from ex-husband Pulkit Samrat

ShwetaRohira and PulkitSamrat had a rather ugly break-up last year. The news of Pulkit's affair with Yami was all over the news and still continues to make headlines. Finally, Shweta and Pulkit called off their relationship.

While Pulkit's career is going nowhere, with nothing except Fukrey 2 and a series of unflattering films that he's been doing off late, Shweta who is also Salman Khan's rakhi sister, seems to be dealing well with the break-up. She is calm and composed and now unaffected by most things that are being said .

In a recent interview, she compared her separation to death. She told curly Tales, "I look at my separation as a death of a relationship. Exactly how I look at my father's death. I did have a few unanswered questions for him but there is no way I can reach out to him. So I made peace with both these facts."

More power to you, Shweta!
