Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has imposed a fine on the Naroda GIDC Industrial Estate, after finding an illegal drainage connection made by the estate into the civic body's drainage system. Civic officials said that such illegal connections are further polluting the Kharicut canal, which has recently gotten a facelift after a mammoth one-month-long effort.
A press release issued by the civic body states that the estate had illegally connected their drainage network, without any prior permission. When this incident came to the notice of civic officials, they slapped a fine of Rs 10 lakh on the estate.
"We have prepared an order of fine against the estate. We have found that they are illegally releasing their sewage into Kharicut canal and other places. This is not tolerable," said Municipal Commissioner Vijay Nehra of the AMC. "This notice and fine will remind them that they should take care of their pollution," Nehra added. When one of the members of the estate, Shailesh Patwari, was contacted, he denied receiving any such document or notice of fine from the civic body. "We haven't received any such notice. In case they do send it, we are not going to pay any fine. We will fight this matter legally. There is no illegal drainage by us," Patwari said.
Other factories get slapped notice, fine
In the south zone, the civic body received a tip that some factories were releasing industrial effluents. Based on the tip, officials sent a sample from different factories to the laboratory and the results did not conform to the Gujarat Pollution Control Board's standards. A penalty of Rs 50,000 each was imposed on four such polluting units. The civic body has also written to the GPCB to take punitive measures against the units.
