As many as eight to 10 children and two pregnant of an Anganwadi centre in the Uttam Nagar area were hospitalised after they complained of vomiting after consuming mid-day meal on Tuesday, the police said. Many of them also lost consciousness. They had consumed rice and boiled gram. No case has been registered so far.
According to the police, 47-year-old Anita, a resident of Hastal Vihar in Dwarka's Uttam Nagar, has been running the Anganwadi centre for 11 years. Her helper, Rama, has been working at the centre for five to six months. The meal served to the children and the pregnant women were supplied from Akriti Self Help Group located at Deepak Vihar in Uttam Nagar. The self-help group claims that same meal was supplied to 30 more Anganwadis and was thoroughly checked before the distribution.
The children and the women were immediately admitted into the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital (DDU) for treatment. Senior police officials added that once the report from the doctors is received about what exactly caused their health to deteriorate, then they shall initiate an action.
Some children were unconscious while some of them were constantly vomiting, and at the time of taking them to the hospital, their condition was getting worse. "We are looking into the matter and the investigation is still going on. The reports from the doctors will help us to establish a case of negligence and only then adequate legal action will be taken, " the police said.
The Anganwadi centre has 46 children and 13 pregnant women.
