The Fee Regulatory Committee (Technical) has announced a revised fee for colleges in the state, by slashing it for the academic year 2018-19. Many colleges suffered at least 20% fee slash whereas one of the colleges suffered 70% cut.

The FRC (Technical) also made it clear that apart from the approved fees, colleges should not charge the students. Also, the colleges are not allowed to charge more than one-term-fee at a time. However, for fee determination of year 2019-20 of the present fee block, the institutions shall have to submit proposal along with detail audited financial data latest by June 1, 2019.

For Vadodara Institute of Architecture, which had proposed 1,40,000 for Bachelor of Architecture programme, the committee approved Rs 85,000 whereas for Bhagwan Mahavir College of Pharmacy, Surat, as against Rs 99,000 proposed for Diploma in Pharmacy course, the committee approved only Rs 30,000.

The decision of FRC (Technical) comes as a major relief to students after the cap on deposit fee. The colleges across Gujarat were collecting deposit moeny from students apart from fees.

Jainik Vakil, member, FRC (Technical) had said, “After receiving a number of complaints from students seeking help for huge sums of money that colleges were charging in terms of deposit money, we had decided that fees includes everything like caution money, extra-curricular activities fee, etc. Last month, show-cause notices to 453 colleges were issued. The colleges had also returned deposit money worth Rs 1.6 crore to the students. The present fee structure has been decided after examining the merits of the proposal of colleges.”
