In a major decision, the Gujarat University on Saturday decided to do away with online admission process from the next academic year. In another important decision, the varsity also decided to reduce the exam time from three hours to 2.5 hours.

The decision to scrap the online admission process has been taken mainly to ensure that the admission process is completed on time and academic session starts on time, a senior official said.

"The online process is too time consuming and because of that, admission process goes on for two months. It was a waste of time as well as resources. We are looking for an alternative admission process, but haven't yet decided on the same," GU vice chancellor Himanshu Pandya said.

As a result of the decision, the online admission process for various courses such as BA, BCom, BSc, MA, MCom, among others would be scrapped.

DNA had reported recently that GU is mulling giving more autonomy to colleges to give admissions on their own, while the varsity would only oversee the process. In a major decision, the syndicate members of Gujarat University have decided to terminate estate engineer for irregularities in construction contracts. Darshan Solanki, estate engineer was suspended in 2016 after porn clips were found in his computer and irregularities of 52 lakh contract was found.

After the university had initiated an inquiry against Solanki, a detailed report was filed last month and he was asked to file a reply on the inquiry. "The inquiry report had found all nine charges against him right.

He was then asked to file a reply on the same. In his reply, he mentioned that the inquiry report was readied only to make officials happy. The same was not acceptable and hence the syndicate members decided that he should be terminated. He has been informed the same," GU Vice-Chancellor Himanshu Pandya said.

27 ELIGIBLE COLLEGES

A report on the eligibility of new applications for colleges was submitted during the syndicate meeting on Saturday. Of 39 new applications received by the university, 27 have been found eligible as per the UGC. "Among those found eligible are also some of the presently run colleges who want to open another branch. We will now have to check students strength and vacant seats so that we can allow students."
